As an artist and teacher, my creative journey has been profoundly shaped by the people around me. Much of my
work is inspired by specific suggestions and encouragement I’ve received from others. They saw potential in
my abilities, and their input has significantly influenced my artistic direction. Their belief in my talent
and their ideas have been pivotal in my decision to pursue art. In essence, their support and inspiration
have not only guided my artistic path but also fueled my passion and commitment to create meaningful
pieces.
For example, while teaching at Fairview Alternative School, I was asked to create a piece for Black History
Month. That request led to a 4’x8’ mural about Martin Luther King’s life. It is currently on display in the
Bruce Watkins Cultural Center. The King mural led to various commissions over the years, such as an African
market scene, an African dancer, portraits, and a Southern Black baptism in a pond. Each project allowed me
to explore diverse cultures and experiences, including Victorian, Asian, and Classical Italian sculpture and
architecture. Many of these pieces were inspired by requests for subjects I hadn’t ever considered. I’m
grateful that these opportunities have shaped my creative path and deepened my passion for what I do.
